So what's with all the buzz about creational advertising, and what exactly is it?
Creational advertising is a melding of two distinct verticles- creative and directional advertising. For the purpose of our analysis, we will also include broadcast, print, out of home and newspaper- basically all advertising that is not explicitly tracked through a specific means.
While creative's strength is it's focus on the thought provoking and emotional aspects of advertising, it's weakness is measurement. As we have seen with the recent Nielsen and Arbitron fiascos, it is very difficult to measure something without a specific tool to do so.
A notable exception to this would be AT&T Uverse, which is an IP based broadcast system that tracks the behavior or a customer at every given moment. Very impressive product!
Yahoo in the process of refining it's banner ad program, which makes step toward moving from creative to creational. Their "behavioral targeting" algorithm focuses on serving ads to customers who are in the 2nd degree of search. This customer might not be searching Google for a chevy truck, but they just sent an email to a local chevy dealership via Yahoo mail, and they are now seeing a banner ad focusing on the new Camaro on the right side of their screen.
This product is also directional, in that Yahoo tracks and reports every impression and click on the ad. Other similar programs are solely measured and sold via CPM (cost per thousand) impressions.
This measured creative advertising concept will be developed much more in the months to come, which is a great thing for businesses who need to measure every result from their advertising.
